Mark's love of football...specifically Mehlville football...is one way many people remember Mark.  It is how he wanted to be remembered..as a champion.

This is more than a goal post....

There's magic in this goal post...

Probably one of the best tributes to Mark will never be seen by anyone.  A memorial of sorts has been placed at the base of the new west end goal post, just a few feet from the sign proclaiming Mehlville Football 1999 Champs.   Shortly before Mark died, Tom Ludwig told Mark that he would like something very special done to honor Mark.  In June 2007, construction of a new turf for Mehlville High School was underway.  Beneath that goal post is Tom Ludwig's vision..a time capsule of sorts honoring Mark and his teammates.  A sealed box containing Mark's Superman shirt he wore under his jersey in every game (handed down to him by Tom), several pictures including one of the 1999 State Championship teammates and printouts of Mark's obituary and eulogies, was quietly placed there.  This box was placed in the opening created for the west end goal post and covered with 5 feet of concrete.  For now and always, when the Mehlville Panthers come onto the field and tap the goal post.....they will be hitting where Mark and his teammates have placed some memories and hopefully will provide power and inspiration to the football Panthers of the future. Jack Jordan along with members of Mehlville School Board and supporters who helped make possible new turf at Jack Jordan Stadium.  Mark was remembered by Mr. Jordan during the ceremony for his football career as a Panther, as well as his courageous fight against cancer. The moment of silence provided friends and family to think about the past, and look forward to new beginnings.  Even with the new turf, the dirt from the Jungle still exists. Following Mark's very last game as a Panther, he refused to allow his mom to wash his Panther satins...because "they have the Jungle in them."  They remain in safekeeping, still with the Jungle dirt,  at his parents' house.  The family is grateful to Mr. Jordan for his moving tribute and many kindnesses.

Our Superman

Here is Mark wearing the famous Superman tshirt.  This shirt was worn by Tom Ludwig during his varsity years at Mehlville and handed down to Mark.  Mark wore it every game he played as Mehlville Panther, starting with his very first varsity game as a sophomore.  Mark holds the record for the most consecutive varstity starts...a true superman.  This is the shirt that was placed in the memory time capsule that is at the base of the west end goal post.  Mark lent the shirt out only once...to be worn by his cousin, Mick, in Mick's Vianney bid for hockey state championship.

Uncle Mike and Kyle

Kyle with Uncle Mike.  Kyle has been attending Mehlville Panther Football games since he was an infant.  He was just one year old when he went to the State Championship game in 1999 to watch his cousin, Mark, play.  Kyle likes to spend his free time drawing up plays for Coach Heyde.

Mark's cousin, Jeff Henderson, attended the dedication of the new field on August 31, 2007.  An extra bonus for Jeff was getting to meet Jack Jordan.
