Mike and Deb's Dragonfly Experience
Excerpt from an email blog that Deb/Mike sent out to friends and family
while on their vacation: Thursday: ...(Side note here - Barb connects dragonflies to messages/hello's from Mark) We stayed in an area on the Outer Banks called Kitty
Hawk. We were pleasantly surprised when we saw this
later printed on the back of a brochure:
How did Kitty Hawk get named? Many believe the name is derived from a Native American name “Chickeawk” or “Chickahawk”,
a time or place to hunt geese. Others believe it is derived
from early English pronunciation of “mosquito hawk” or “skeeter hawk,” a name commonly used for the
dragonfly that swarms near this village at certain times of the year – mostly in June. But to tell you the truth – even though we kept an eye out for them - We didn’t see any..
The tour guide on the wild mustang evening kept
mentioning the Dragonflies - over and over....he must have said the word dragonfly 20 times! (But we still hadn't
seen any..) Friday – Saturday – a few more sites then Home!
Friday early morning , we
walked a few blocks just to take in the atmosphere of bustling working Washington,DC. We saw many diplomat
license plates, saw the building of Veteran’s Affairs. We then sat out at a sidewalk café and had a cup of coffee
to take a breath and reflect on our wonderful trip.. We got up to leave….and
a green and black “Mehlville” Dragon fly landed on the ground in front of us! He stayed there
until I took out my camera, took a photo…then flew off.
